Marlene was an old friend of Klink, who (at least, according to Klink) was madly in love with him a long time ago, although they never so much as kissed. She became engaged to Count von Heffernick, who was concerned that Marlene might still carry a torch for him. Hogan encouraged Klink to portray himself as a sloppy drunkard when Marlene came to visit him in an attempt to turn her off. However, Hogan correctly guessed that Marlene had never felt anything for him and was just leading her fiancé on. She married von Heffernick and the two spent their honeymoon in Paris.
